oware.akuadora.net lets you play Oware, the sowing game of the Akan people of Ghana, in your web browser. The board is drawn as a carved wooden board on a kente mat.
What you can do
- Play the computer at three levels: easy, medium or hard.
- Play a person: you are matched with the next player who is looking, and you play live, move by move.
- Keep a record of your wins, draws and losses, and see who tops the list of best players.
Getting started
- Go to oware.akuadora.net.
- Choose Create account and pick a player name and a password. No email address is needed.
- Choose Play the computer or Play a person.
The rules in short
- The board has two rows of six pits; the row nearest to you is yours. Every pit starts with four seeds.
- On your turn you pick up all seeds from one of your pits and sow them one by one, counter-clockwise.
- If your last seed makes a pit on your opponent's side hold two or three seeds, you capture them.
- Whoever captures 25 of the 48 seeds wins.
The full rules are on the game page under How to play, and the Oware guide on the help site explains everything step by step.
